Howells Headstone marked for relocation
We are seeking descendants of Joseph HOWELLS, son of John HOWELLS and Fanny Louisa FERRIDAY who was born on 11 September 1818 in Snedshill, Shropshire.
Joseph married Eliza DOWNING on 4 November 1839 at Holy Trinity Church Wrockwardine Wood, Shropshire, at the time of his marriage he was working as a miner. The baptism records of his children show that Joseph and his family were living in Snedshill, Shropshire. He lived all his life in Snedshill and by the time of the 1851 census he had become a Charter Master at the local mine. The Charter Master organised the gang of miners and negotiated the rate of pay for the amount of coal they produced with the mine manager/owner.
Eliza died on 28 February 1888 aged 69 and Joseph died 9 years later on 18 September 1897 aged 79 and was buried on 21 September 1897 at St Georges Church.

Children of Joseph and Eliza Howells
John HOWELLS was born on 1 November 1840 in Snedshill, Shropshire and baptised on 22 November 1840 at The Nabb Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. On 22 November 1840
John married Hillaria HAZLEDINE in 1861 in Wellington, Shropshire. By the time of the census in 1871 they had moved to 29 Monfort St, Brightside Bierlow Sheffield Yorkshire. From the census in 1881 until the census of 1901 the family was living at 74 Page Hall Rd, Brightside Bierlow Sheffield Yorkshire. Hillaria died aged 56 in 1898 whilst living in Sheffield.
At the time of the census in 1911 John, now a widower, was living with his son Joseph and his wife at 8 Hamilton Road, Firth Park.
John died aged 79 in 1920 in Sheffield.

Fanny HOWELLS was born on 9 August 1843 in Snedshill and baptised on 27 August 1843 at St Georges Church. Fanny married Alfred Lewis on 9 Jul 1864. Fanny died in 1866 in Snedshill age just 23 years old was buried in St Georges Churchyard.
Ann HOWELLS was born on 30 July 1848 in Snedshill and baptised on 20 August 1848 at St Georges Church.
Ann married William JOHNSON on 22 September 1868 in Shifnal, Shropshire. In the census in April 1871 they were living at 25 Monfort St, Brightside Bierlow Sheffield Yorkshire.
Richard HOWELLS was born on 9 June 1851 in Snedshill and baptised on 29 June 1851 at St Georges Church. On the 1871 census he was living with his sister Ann and her husband in Sheffield. Richard died in Sheffield in 1918 aged 67.
Benjamin HOWELLS was born on 28 November 1853 and baptised on 25 December 1853 at St Georges Church.
Benjamin married Martha COPE on 15 August 1877 in Shifnal. In the census of 1881 they were living in Sheffield, by the time of the 1891 census they had moved back to Shropshire and were living in Gower St.
By August 1896 they had moved 36 Bushbury Lane, Bushbury Wolverhampton. He died on 10 October 1906 in Wolverhampton.

Joseph HOWELLS was born late 1855 in Shifnal. At the time of 1871 census he was working as a Footman in Haughton, Shropshire. By the time of 1881 census he had move to Madeley and was an Innkeeper at the Royal Exchange, High St. He married Mary EVANS on 21 January 1885 at All Saints Church Broseley. Joseph died on 17 February 1893 in Madeley.
Thomas HOWELLS was born circa December 1857 in Pains Lane, Shropshire and was baptised on 31 January 1858 at St Georges Church.
Ellen HOWELLS was born circa April 1860 and was baptised on 13 May 1860 at St Georges Church.
Martha HOWELLS was born circa November 1862 in Snedshill and was baptised on 10 December 1862 at St Georges Church.

John HOWELLS son of John HOWELLS and Hillaria HAZLEDINE was born in 1864 in Sheffield. He is believed to have died in 1940 in Sheffield.
Fanny HOWELLS daughter of John HOWELLS and Hillaria HAZLEDINE was born in 1867 in Sheffield.
Ellen HOWELLS daughter of John HOWELLS and Hillaria HAZLEDINE was born in 1869 in Sheffield.
Hillaria HOWELLS daughter of John HOWELLS and Hillaria HAZLEDINE was born in 1871 in Sheffield, she died in Rotherham Yorkshire in 1959 aged 87.
Hillaria married Henry DODWELL in late 1901 in Sheffield. She died aged 87 in November 1959 in Rotherham. She was buried on 12 November 1959 in Masbrough Cemetery, Yorkshire.

Annie HOWELLS daughter of John HOWELLS and Hillaria HAZLEDINE was born in 1877 in Sheffield. She married George PAINE in 1902 in Sheffield. She died aged 89 in late 1967 in Sheffield. George PAINE was born in 1879 in Brighton Sussex and died in 1950 in Sheffield aged 70.

Frederick HOWELLS son of Benjamin HOWELLS and Martha COPE was born on 22 June 1882 in Sheffield and was baptised on 27 September 1882 at St Margaret’s Church, Brightside. He married Mary Ethel PERRY in 1905 in Wolverhampton. Mary Ethel PERRY was born circa 1885 in Wolverhampton.

Bertha Pauline HOWELLS daughter of Benjamin HOWELLS and Martha COPE was born in 1893 in Wolverhampton.
Horace Frank HOWELLS son of Benjamin HOWELLS and Martha COPE was born on 30 June 1896 in Wolverhampton and was baptised on 6 August 1896 at Christ Church, Dunstall Wolverhampton. At the time of the 1939 Identity register was taken he and his wife Edna were living at 148 Warstones Rd Wolverhampton. He worked as an Engineering Estimator & Rate Fixer in Wolverhampton. Horace died in 1962 in Wolverhampton and Edna died 22 years later in 1984 also in Wolverhampton.
Douglas HOWELLS son of Benjamin HOWELLS and Martha COPE was born on 22 April 1898 in Wolverhampton and was baptised on 9 June 1898 at Christ Church, Dunstall Wolverhampton. Douglas died in Wolverhampton in 1972 aged 73.

John Joseph DODWELL the son of Henry DODWELL and Hillaria HOWELLS was born in 1907 in Rotherham. He married Rose BARFOOT in 1929 in Rotherham and died in late 1967 in Rotherham.
Annie PAINE daughter of George Paine and Annie HOWELLS was born on 9 September 1902 in Sheffield and was baptised on 15 October 1902 at All Saints Church, Brightside.
Gertrude Constance HOWELLS daughter of Frederick HOWELLS and Mary Ethel PERY was born on 25 February 1906 in Wolverhampton. She married George Dan WILTSHIRE in 1930 in Brighton and died in 1987 in Brighton.
Donald Benjamin HOWELLS son of Frederick HOWELLS and Mary Ethel PERRY was born on 3 July 1909 in Wolverhampton. He married Eileen F T MOORS in 1937 in Brighton. He died in 1993 in Portslade-by-the-Sea.
The reason for the search for descendants is due to St Georges Church planning to relocate 7 headstones away from the spot marking the graves and to put against a wall elsewhere in the churchyard in order to create a communal area for events, which local people are finding distasteful.
