Early Irish Census records added to FamilySearch
FamilySearch have added a number of early Irish Census records to their collection.
The majority of Irish Census records prior to 1901 were destroyed, however a few returns remain for some of the counties in Ireland.
The records on FamilySearch cover the period from 1821 to 1851 as follows:
Ireland 1821 Census – Just under 10,500 images available, covering around 275,000 records
Ireland 1831 Census – Just under 4,000 images available, covering around 80,000 records
Ireland 1841 Census – Just under 2,500 images available, covering around 16,000 records
Ireland 1851 Census – Just under 9,500 images available, covering around 58,000 records
Also available are the Ireland 1841 and 1851 Census Search Forms. – The government used these forms to search the 1841 & 1851 Census to prove the age of people applying for the Old Age Pension when birth certificates did not exist because the person was born before Civil Registration had begun.
