GRO Launch Birth & Death Indexes

GRO Launch searchable Birth & Death Indexes

The GRO have launched their version of online searchable indexes covering the period 1837 to 1915 for births & 1837 to 1957 for deaths for England and Wales.

The site allows births to be searched for registered surname and mothers maiden name which previously was only available from mid 1911 and deaths have age at death, which was only available from c1866.

For Historic Records they have used the same demarcation as used by the National Records of Scotland and GRO Northern Ireland i.e.

  • Births over 100 years
  • Deaths over 50 years

Deaths only go up to 1957, not 1966, as records beyond that date have not been digitised, also no marriages have been digitised.

The General Register Office started a project in 2005 called Project DoVE (Digitisation of Vital Events) this project undertook to digitise the Births, Marriages and Deaths, however funding was withdrawn in September 2010 following the Governments Comprehensive Spending Review, Its understood that the records that were digitised now form this index subject the Historical Records criteria outlined above.

As for further digitising quote from FAQs on the GRO website:

“Completing the digitisation of records would require significant investment and there are no current plans to resume this work but we continue to monitor the scope for future opportunities to complete the digitisation of all birth, death and marriage records.”

It allows births to be searched for registered surname and mothers maiden name previously only available from mid 1911 and deaths have age at death.

The indexed is accessed by signing into the GRO website, the ordering process is as before, you will need to register if you have not used site before, existing user will go through a one off email verification process.
